The Statesman reported the successful treatment of an 18-year-old Iraqi teenager at Shalby International Hospital, Gurugram, who had a one-centimetre metal fragment lodged dangerously close to his optic nerve for nearly a year following an explosion. The teenager had already lost nearly 70% of his vision in the affected eye and continued to experience pain. A multidisciplinary team led by Dr Harnarayan Singh , Director and HOD, Neurosurgery, and Dr Kunal Nigam, Senior Consultant and HOD, ENT, performed a five-hour endoscopic endonasal surgery through the nose to safely remove the fragment while preserving his remaining vision. The complex procedure provided an alternative to conventional skull surgery and avoided additional risk to the optic nerve.
